The most famous of the theater awards in the region, the Helen Hayes Awards, are given in recognition of outstanding work in the professional theater community of Washington, Maryland and Virginia. Begun in 1983 when there were but 14 professional theaters producing in the area, the award program has become a major factor in the promotion of the incredibly vibrant theater community in the Potomac Region. The award was named for legendary actress and Washington DC native, Helen Hayes, "the first lady of the American theater." A special feature of the program is an award given for the outstanding new play which is named for Helen Hayes' husband, playwright Charles MacArthur. Linda Levy Grossman now heads up the organization, having succeeded the founding executive director, Elizabeth Brown.

For the work on a show to be eligible for consideration, a number of qualifications must be met: the actors must be paid, the theater must have the rights to perform the play and there must be 16 or more performances. A pool of more than sixty judges are available to see each eligible production. The pool is divided into panels of judges who are normally assigned to either musicals or straight plays or premieres. The judges assigned to attend a specific production cast their ballots independently without discussing it among themselves. The nominees for calendar year 2007 were announced February 25, 2008 and the winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the Warner Theatre on April 28.
