In
1968, the British Embassy Players, now the British Players, established an award program in honor of
one of their founding members who had died from a stroke suffered on opening
night of one of their productions. Ruby Griffith was born in London and had
a professional career in theater before she came to the United States. She
served as the artistic director of the company in its early years and was
directing the production that was to open the night of her stroke.
When
first established, the Ruby Griffith Award for All-Around Production
Excellence was awarded each year to a production of one of the fourteen
companies participating in the Washington Theatre Alliance. In the early
1970s the scope of the award program was expanded to include any amateur
theatre group meeting specific requirements. In the early 1990s the program
went from awarding a single trophy each year to awarding the trophy plus two
plaques - one for Outstanding Achievement in a Musical and one for
Outstanding Achievement in a Non-Musical.
Today, the awards are given out at a summer ceremony honoring the awardees
from the previous eligibility period (June 1 - May 31). The awards for the
2006-07 season were presented July 15 at a by-invitation-only ceremony at
the Bretton Woods Recreation Center in Germantown MD. Here are the winners for the 2006-07 Season:
