Pirates of Penzance
Gilbert and Sullivan’s delightful comic operetta about an apprentice pirate
who longs to be free of his indentures. It was a phenomenal hit in 1879 and
has remained popular ever since. The plot revolves around the complication
that the lad's indentures are to last until his 21st Birthday and not simply
until he turns 21. Since he was born on February 29 of a leap year, he won’t
have accumulated 21 birthdays for nearly a century.
