Once Upon A
Mattress
In 1959 a light and funny summer camp musical based on the tale of the
would-be-princess whose "sensitivity" is tested by the Queen by placing a
pea under her mattress was expanded for a Broadway staging. Perhaps it was
the score by Richard Rodgers’ daughter, Mary, or the talent of a young Carol
Burnett, but the show was a hit and has become a staple of the community and
dinner theater circuit.
